Suggested addition to animals not requiring MA permits

Suggested addition to animals not requiring MA permits

Currently all monitor lizards require opermits in Massachusetts. Suggestion: Next time the permit system is revisited, exempt the monitor lizard Varanus acanthurus, the "ackie". This is smaller than a bearded dragon, and is a good pet lizard that does not belong on the list with the potentially hazardous much larger monitors. All monitors have specialized habitat and care requirements, but the smaller ones are well within the capabilities of an experienced herper.

A "Certificate of Captive - Breeding" is all that is required for a permit for
any monitor lizard currently on the restricted species list. I have copies
available. This form is presented to the breeder of the animal in question,
the breeder fills out the form and signs it, the buyer signs it
and submits it to Dr. Thomas French at MassWildlife, One Rabbit Hill Road
Westborough MA 01581. See me at the next meeting for a copy of this form.
